In 15th and 16th century Europe, at the peak of the witch-hunting era, witch and woman were practically synonymous. Those accused of and executed for witchcraft were - in the large majority - women. Things have moved on a lot in terms of women's rights since then, but there is still a long way to go to achieve equal opportunities and parity in the work place.
